Pulgas Water Temple

When you think of Silicon Valley, your mind goes directly to computers, startups, and tech enthusiasts destinations. But you may be surprised to find out that in this thriving tech hub, there are natural and architectural marvels that are simply picture-perfect.

Grab your camera and explore these beautiful Silicon Valley destinations:

The Pulgas Water Temple
56 Cañada Road, Redwood City

Pulgas Water Temple

The Pulgas Water Temple looks like it came straight out of a Greco-Roman myth. The imposing ivory columns and crystal-clear reflecting pool are surrounded by tall, lush trees. When the sun hits the water it shimmers, creating a mesmerizing effect.

This temple was created in 1938 to commemorate the completion of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir which brings water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains (150 miles away) to the Bay Area.

Stanford University
450 Serra Mall, Stanford

Gate and Hoover Tower

Stanford University is home to plenty of photogenic locations. Go to the top of the Hoover Tower for magnificent views of the Palo Alto area. If you want a renaissance aesthetic, the Memorial Church of Stanford delivers both in its architecture and artwork.

For those looking for a modern backdrop, the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Artwork has a Cubist-inspired active art installation called the Peter Wegner’s Monument to Change as it Changes. This mural is made up of over 2,000 colored chips that are programmed to create a different pattern every eight hours.

Alviso Marina County Park
1195 Hope Street, Alviso

Alviso Landing

The Alviso Marine County Park has many picturesque areas where you can capture natural landscapes and wildlife on your camera. What makes this county park so well-known is the mysterious yellow doorway. Found in the middle of a field surrounded by the tall grass and wildflowers, the inconspicuous house-shaped gate provides a perfect view of mountains, a lake, and the seemingly endless sky.

The kitschy-ness of the structure has made it a popular spot for visitors. It has also become the backdrop for many a photo shoot. The best time to see this doorway is during sunset when the sky changes colors.

San Pedro Square Market
87 North San Pedro Street, San Jose

San Pedro Square

Retro is a word that best describes the San Pedro Square Market’s aesthetic. The warehouse-style façade with the classic neon sign on top makes for an interesting photograph. Inside, the outdoor patio near the historic Peralta Adobe is also a great place for taking photos.

Redwood Groves at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park
101 North Big Trees Park Road, Felton

Looking up

These ancient redwood groves are hidden in the Santa Cruz Mountains. They are among the most beautiful features in the state park. You’ll be in awe of the seasonal waterfalls and the natural environment. Make sure you bring a high-quality camera, though – the relatively thick forest canopy above allows for low lighting only.
