Keeping yourself busy in the midst of a pandemic

Preparing some delicious risotto

There was a time when making a difference in this world meant going out and doing relevant stuff. But when this COVID-19 pandemic descended upon us, making a difference in this world now means staying home and preventing the spread of this deadly coronavirus.

Being cooped up at home for an extended time can do nasty things to the mind and body, though, so we gathered several fun things that you can do so you can savor the downtime you have on your own or with family.

Solo things to do

  • Engage in a craft. There are some things you’ve been dying to do pre-pandemic but couldn’t because you were too busy. Well, you’ve got time in your hands now – by all means, get moving! Get on your hands and knees to finally create that coffee table, the materials of which have been gathering dust in the shed! Or start shimmying in the kitchen to cook the perfect pasta.
  • Get planting. You don’t need to go to a plant nursery – your local market or grocery can be your best source for stuff to plant. You can come up with a sustainable vegetable garden that, in time, will provide you with the spices and veggies you’ll need – you’ll never have to buy produce at the supermarket again! • Bust some awesome moves. Are we referring to exercise? Not necessarily. Simply dancing on your own or with the family to a cool dance tune (or two, or three…) will not only burn those calories – it will also give you a strong kick of endorphins or what’s called happy hormones. And that’s exactly what we need at this time.

Things to do with the family

  • Complete a jigsaw puzzle. This activity can be done solo but it’s much more fun to do with the family as everyone pitches in to scrounge through a hundred tiles or more for the perfect fit.
  • An indoor obstacle course? Why not? Your living room can be turned into the perfect space to create a mini obstacle course for the kids! Just push aside some furniture except for those that can be used as components of the course. (The couch definitely remains but the TV has to go.) Make use of available cushions, chairs, and pillows then see your kids spend hours of fun rolling and crawling around in the product of your creativity.
  • Play with the kids. Care to have make-believe tea with Winnie the Pooh, Greta the Ragdoll, and your kids while wearing a plastic tiara? Or you can participate in a cuddle and tickle bonanza with them. Now’s your time to give them the attention they crave for.
